Zoll was incorporated in 1980 by the company's three co-founders, Dr. Paul M. Zoll, Willard M. Bright, and Rolf Stutz, largely as a result of Dr. Zoll's years of research in external defibrillation. In 1956 Dr. Zoll was the first physician to successfully use external defibrillation to regulate heart rhythms in patients.

Zoll Medical Corporation became a publicy traded company in 1992 (NASDAQ: ZOLL), and designed their first AED, the Zoll AED Plus in 2001. The AED Plus, in conjunction with Zoll's new CPR-D•padz®, resulted in the industry's first AED to provide instanenous CPR feedback - coaching the user in correct depth and rate of CPR compressions.
