Medtronic was founded in April 1949 by Earl Bakken & his brother in-law Palmer Hermundslie as a medical equipment repair company, Physio-Control was founded in 1955 by Dr. Karl William Edmark who pioneered defibrillation in the late 1950's. Medtronic & Physio-Control joined forces in 1998 to form the world's leading medical technology company, known as Medtronic Emergency Response Systems, (NYSE: MDT) headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2006 the Physio-Control name & logo once again reappeared as they became a division of Medtronic and were fully divested from Medtronic on February 22nd, 2011. The companies continue to partner together to seamlessly provide Physio-Control products to Medtronic customers.
LIFEPAK AEDs are the only AEDs on the market today that offers the capability to shock Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) victims from 200 joules to 360 joules. While the initial shock delivered at 200J has been shown to be effective at defibrillating the heart of a majority of SCA victims, some patients are more difficult to defibrillate than others. Simply put, the capacity to shock up to 360J gives patients a better opportunity for a better outcome.
